3-Day Painting Workshops

Greetings!

The move to my home studio in So. Bethany is now complete and I am working once again! I have had a very successful fall teaching schedule and just finished teaching at Kripalu Yoga Center, Expressing your Personal Vision Through Painting! Over the last few months, I have been reinventing my goals and have had teaching opportunities in other locales, including Reading, Pa., Kripalu, MA and the new locations listed below.
In October, several of us painted in Paint Onancock, Va. Connie Schlee got 2nd place, Doreen Currie won Honorable Mention, and I received Artist's Choice! Early January, I was juried into a plein air event in Cape Coral along with Connie. I won 1st prize! YAHOO! It was cold but exhilerating painting in the outdoors!
I am loving painting outside! I have been working with the Red Queen Gallery in Onancock, Va. to provide an absolutely unique opportunity to sharpen your outdoor skills with emphasis on brushwork, personal translation of the subject, and color power during the Eastern Shore Garden week.  The Red Queen Art Gallery and Garden Art on King have offered to display our work!

I hope to see you at one of my workshops soon! HAPPY PAINTING!

Surface Complexity - March 8, 9, 10 - York Art Association, York, Pa.

We will focus on the journey of exploring and expressing our unique vision with three days of building the painting surface using diverse support textures and products, adding collage and using various nontraditional tools working towards developing your own unique content. Intentions are based on play, strong composition and design. Painting emphasis is on shape, inventive color as we make choices based on intuition and improvisation. Some painting experience is necessary!

Call York Art Association 717-755-0028 for information or www.yorkartassociation.org

Garden Week - Plein Air, Onancock, Va. (April 21, 22, 23)

On location in the historic, beautiful waterside Onancock, Va. We will work in our sketchbooks for great ideas and then translate the sketches into dyanmic paintings. Onancock is a quaint eastern shore town that provides scenic painting opportunities for water, boats, wetlands, and beautiful historic homes, within an easy driving distance! This is perfect if you have always wanted to paint outdoors in your own style! Early morning technique and goal discussions and late afternoon get together critiques will encourage comraderie and great artistic growth.
We will have the opportunity to display our completed work at the Red Queen Gallery Onancock and gardenArt on King Street.
     Some painting experience is necessary!

If you have any interest, please let me know as soon as possible as space is limited. The cost will be $500 and will include shared accomodations. B & B accomodations are also available.

Materials for Plein Air Garden Week - Onancock, Va.

We will have a glorious spring world to paint! I can’t wait!!!!!!

Here is the list of materials:
Hat
Sunscreen - lather up while dressing in the morning
Sketchbook and pen ++++++a must have
I use a water soluable pencil - 6 - 8 B
Paper towels
Small folding stool if you like to sit. Mine fits into my backpack. I got it from www.cheapjoes.com
Small container of Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish
Extras: glove liners if cold, plastic gloves (if it’s really cold), insect repellent, swiss army knife, single edge razor blades, bungie cords, large hair bands, water bottle for drinking and one for water.

Easel - I use a Julian half box French easel, and Easy L with tripod, and an open box M with same tripod. I have photos for you to see all the easels and the set-ups.
Here are websites for  Easy L Versa model www.artworkessentials.com/products and Open Box M www.openboxm.com/ model 10x12 Palette/Panel Holder Oil.
The half box French easel is heavy and cumbersome but can hold very large canvasses.

The Easy L can hold up to 20” high and almost any width canvasses and has larger working area. The box and additional tripod are well made. The drawbacks are that you must carry it separately or get a larger suitcase and it is heavier. It comes with a brush holder and water bucket hangers. I have tied a ribbon to the hanger. I lost the first one almost immediately!

The Open Box M palette/panel holder is lightweight and fits (almost) into my rolling backpack. The biggest drawback is that it can only hold canvasses that are 20” wide max. They offer an additional tripod. The tripod I got with the Easy L is really nice and has a hook on it for tying your backpack to hold it down in windy conditions.
I have also used a plastic easel for many years but I really prefer one that allows me to tie down my palette so I do not have to hold it all day.

I have lined both the Open Box M and Easy L boxes with plexiglass that I sprayed white on the back to mix on to save the bottom of the box and negate the use of disposable paper palettes. (Thanks, Connie)

Acrylic palette- I use a guerrilla backpacker palette from www.guerrillapainter.com. It fits in all easels. I also use a collapsible water bucket available there.

Paint-I use mostly soft body acrylics in TUBES. I use a warm and cool of each primary color. You do not have to buy what I have. This is just a guide. Liquitex: Hansa Yellow Light, Hansa Yellow Medium, Yellow Orange Azo, Quin Gold,  Napthol Red Light, Golden quinacridone magenta, ultramarine blue red shade, pthalo blue green shade and a BIG tube of TITANIUM WHITE. Use whatever colors you are accustomed to working with.

Brushes - I generally use a flat brush in sizes 6 & 8 and a round #2 for drawing. They are the stiffer acrylic brush and not soft like watercolor. I also use a 1” flat watercolor brush with a bevel handle and 2” flat brush. Bring whatever you are comfortable with.

Canvas panels - We will try to work on 5 - 2 each day and the last afternoon for finishing. Canvas panels are cheap and require a frame. You may want to keep an eye out for 40% off plein air frames at Michaels. I think they come in 11 x 14 and 18 x 24. The stretched canvasses with the gallery wrap cost a little bit more but if you get a painting you like, it will not have to be framed. Gallery wrap means that the staples are on the back of the canvas out of sight. They should be the thicker variety.  11 x 14s, 12 x 16 or squares are great. 12 x 16 or 12 x 12 is probably a really great size. I encourage you to also try larger sizes.  You can do 11 x 14 rather quickly and perhaps you may want to try a slightly larger size as well, ie. 16” x 20 or 18 x 24 . Please regesso all pregessoed panels and canvases before you arrive.

Framing Supplies: you will need a small hammer, nail, tape measure, screw driver for phillip head, and framing wire. I will pick up offset clips and wire hangers. I will also have my shooter if you are framing panels. Pack these in a separate bag.

Please organize all of the above, except chair and stool, into some kind of bag or backpack. I have all my warm paints in one plastic bag and my cools in another, the brushes in a small container that stands up so I can see them in the bag, etc. This is so I can see or know where my materials are without having to dump everything out on the ground to find it!
